teaching and learning

After being landed in it without much choice, (I had a conversation with someone after watching a student show at Goldsmiths, and in the space of about two sentences I had agreed to teach a whole term’s course in a subject I knew nothing about see more here) I soon discovered I really enjoy teaching. In order to do it, I have had to do an awful lot of learning. The style and content of my Qlab and Ableton Live lectures are greatly influenced by Gareth Fry. The main resource I have used is The Association of Sound Designers; (you can find some of Gareth’s seminars here). See below for more details, also click here for more about the ASD in general.

I have lectures in Signal Chain and Gain structure, Psychoacoustics, What is Sound Design? These have evolved from the first year curriculum at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. They are based on original templates by Donato Wharton.

Software

I have a series of prepared lectures on using Qlab and Ableton Live specifically for theatre and live performance. These are regularly updated. I have a workshop specifically for Stage Managers on basic sound systems and Qlab.

ASD

Most of my learning comes directly or indirectly from the Association of Sound Designers. The ASD organises training sessions for all aspects of theatre sound design, that can be attended in person; but are also videoed so you can catch up later if you are too busy at the time. Currently, several of these seminars are available to non-members, so if you are thinking of joining the ASD, it might be a good time to try out some of the free seminars, and consider joining in order to access the rest of them. It is no exaggeration to say that I would not be, and could not maintain being a Sound Designer without the support of the ASD; and the training seminars are a large part of that. Have a look around at associationofsounddesigners.com.
